To future historians—not just of computing, but of humanity—the current period will be a dark age.

How was Facebook used by students in the 2010s? We cannot show you, that version of Facebook is not hosted anywhere.

How did MySpace look around 2009? We don't really know, the Wayback Machine only shows a limited amount of static content, and there may only be a few surviving screenshots

What correspondence did Vint Cerf have as president of the ACM with other luminaries of computing industry and research? We do not know; Google will not publish his emails.

What was it like playing Angry Birds on an iPhone 3G? We do not know; Apple is no longer distributing signed receipts for that binary.

What did the British cabinet discuss when they first learned of the Coronavirus pandemic? We do not know; they chatted on a private WhatsApp group.

What books were published analysing the aftermath of the Maidan coup in Ukraine? We do not know; we do not have the keys for the Digital Editions DRM.

How was the coup covered in televised news? We do not know; the broadcasters used RealVideo and Windows Media Encoder and we cannot read those files.

We have to ask ourselves how we are going to preserve and transmit knowledge about our age to the next generations. Knowledge about an age where information is produced, consumed and discarded within hours, days or months, or where it's only stored on the server rooms of a handful of corporations, with no guarantees that those businesses will exist in the future, and with no way of accessing that information unless a certain set of regulatory, hardware, software pre-conditions are met.

That's why projects like the Internet Archive deserve more recognition and funding. That's why web scraping should not only be a civic right, but a civic duty to the next generations. Otherwise all the knowledge about the great age of information will be transmitted orally - with all the distortions that such transmission implies.

This, right here, is why companies everywhere should not use social media alone for service status updates.

The fact that Proton's status page says we should go to Twitter for "more information" means that Proton is less accessible to folks without Twitter accounts. And that's no good.

@kev Personally I've stopped thinking in terms of winning or losing.

The struggle for an ethical internet, against whatever immoral garbage is being pushed at any given time, isn't going to end.

The same goes for environmentalism: no matter how bad (or good) things get, the fight for future generations and non-human life will never be over.

For this reason, the main issues you must not fail at are long-term physical and mental sustainability and choosing battles strategically.

Spent the last week recreating a ten year old website layout using modern HTML and CSS.

So much is possible with vanilla now that evergreen browsers are the norm.

Also didn't need to use any heavy CSS frameworks or libraries. Just Sass and a small library called OpenProps with BEM classes to organise the stylesheets.

We have a deal on the common charger! 🇪🇺

This means more savings for EU consumers and less waste for the planet:

🔌 mobile phones, tablets, cameras… will all use USB type C
🔌 harmonised fast-charging technology
🔌 unbundling of sale of chargers

I’ve been doing great for the last few months. It’s especially effective when you have access to superior coffee at home. ☕️🏡

Hi fediverse! Boosts appreciated on this one.

I’m part of a co-op building a platform for artists to sell art without getting exploited. I’ve been working on it for a while but there’s a lot of work to do and I could use some help. A ton of the main features are in place, but there’s still some big gaps and a lot of polish left before it can launch.

The platform is fully open source and developed in the open. It’s built on Phoenix/Elixir and Tailwindcss. Our co-op is already incorporated and established and it’s open to members that want to actually commit but you don’t need to be a member to contribute or help.

Does this sound interesting? I’d love some help! I’m also happy to answer questions. And no, you don’t need to know Elixir already. It’s pretty easy to learn for the things you’d be using it for. Even some design help would be welcome. Feel free to reply here or DM me!

Obi Wan Kenobi spoiler.

Leia: "You think the less you say, the less you give away. But really, it's the opposite."

Perhaps this will lead to Obi Wan deciding to use his real last name while in exile.

Reading @Gargron's "Cage the Mastodon" blog post from 2018:

I can see the reasoning behind holding back from implementing features found in other platforms. A quote retweet from a more popular channel can be useful in drawing attention but also creates a power imbalance in the conversation.

After the 2019 Christchurch mosque shootings, where 51 people were killed by a white supremacist, New Zealand immediately took action. Almost all semi-automatic weapons and assault riles are now banned.

Mastodon currently doesn't support importing toots due to technical limitations, but there wasn't many in my case.
